Review: The Sweetest Punch at PV Concert Hall
The Sweetest Punch are a folksy duo featuring Ashley Burkhart and Jeremy Rogers (also of The Wobbly Toms) of St. Augustine Fl. I had the chance to check them out when they opened for Ed Kowalczyk February 1st at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall.
Ashley and Jeremy took the stage around 7:30 that night to an almost full house crowd. The opening acts usually have a mere few people to sing to during their performance, but Ed Kowalczyk fans were on time and ready to go. The duo started their set with an original tune titled, “Tammy,” from their new EP, “Kissin’ Cousins.” (Coming soon to bandcamp!) This song brought back memories of watching an old Debbie Reynolds movie called Tammy with my mom years ago as it was reminiscent of the title track of the movie. The song is sweet and innocent , backed only with guitar and Ashley’s angelic voice. Ashley and Jeremy continued the set with both new material and covers like, “Bomb in a Birdcage” by A Fine Frenzy. The crowd grew as the set progressed. Also of note was a medley that included a harmonious mix of “Beneath the Willow Tree,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” and “Swing Low Sweet Chariot.” They closed with their original song, “Let Go.”
I was enamored by Ashley and her ethereal voice and manner. The duo captivated the audience with their sweet banter and musical talent, and Jeremy and Ashley compliment each other so fully it made me wonder if they were also a duo offstage. I departed their show feeling lucky that I am a Florida local and will have the opportunity to see them again.
